How can blogging and other forms of asynchronous writing/ collaboration be seen as patch-writing? How is patch-writing different from plagiarism?

Blogging and other forms of asynchronous writing can be seen as patch-writing because patch-writing is a method of composing in which writers take the words of other authors and patch them together with few changes. Blogging is very similar because it's your thoughts written out in a simple form but your thoughts can be influenced by other people and things hence why it can be seen as patch-writing. Patch-writing is different from plagiarism because plagiarism is usually more than just a few ides taken and often used to take it as your own credit.

Using They Say I Say

http://www.theguardian.com/film/2013/may/19/great-gatsby-review-philip-French

The author of this review, Phillip French, first describes what the movie is about and then talks about what he did and did not like about the film.. Which really shocked me because the reason I decided to analyze this particular movie was because I absolutely loved it. I also loved the older version and the book which I read in my English class in high school. What Phillip French was saying in his review really took me by surprise and made me look at the movie in a whole new way. He states "This is a film that tramples on Fitzgerald's exquisite prose, turning the oblique into the crude, the suggestively symbolic into the declaratively monumental, the abstract into the flatly real." French did not like  the way that the character Nick was shown off as one bit but he did say that Gatsby and Daisy were more successful. French allows the audience to input what they have to say when he states "But there is one scene that works well, and that's the crucial confrontation between Tom Buchanan and Gatsby in front of Nick, Daisy and Jordan in a suite at the Plaza hotel one hot afternoon. There is tension and depth here. Would that Luhrmann had included the funeral and the meeting between Nick and Gatsby's elderly, working-class father from the book's final chapter." This allows us to enter into the discussion and add our opinions as well.

They Say I Say: Evaluating and Using Sources

1. Who is the author of each text? How do the authors present themselves? James Franco and Anthony Lane are the authors. James Franco presents himself by focusing on himself and how much he knows about Wes Anderson. Anthony Lane presents himself as knowing what he is talking about.

2. What is the purpose of each text? What appears to be motivating the authors to write? The purpose of each text is to review the movie "Moonrise Kingdom". It almost seems that what is motivation James Franco is to show everyone how much he knows and what all he has done, just to make himself look good. Where as Anthony Lane is promoting the movie and summarizes the plot.

3. Do the texts demonstrate ethos, or are they full of errors (either mechanical or argumentative)? No matter the answer, give some examples: James Franco does not demonstrate ethos. One thing he says is "one thing about Nana is that she is incapable od saying anyone's name correctly" completely out of context. In Anthony Lane's he says "that lodge inexplicably in the heart" and actually talks about the potential of the movie.

4. Do you agree with the authors partially or in full, or do you disagree with them? I agree with Anthony Lane because he gives a good argument and shows the movie's potential. Where as James Franco doesn't really give an argument at all much less even an opinion.

5. Where do the authors seem to offer direct, or first-person, argumentation? Anthony Lane shows it by saying "we may look back on Anderson's works as we do on the boxes of Joseph Cornell- formal troves of frippery, studded with nostalgic private jokes, that lodge inexplicably in the heart." Franco just relates everything to himself.

6. What don't the authors talk about? Are there flaws or holes in their arguments? Do you agree with the evidence the authors present and the way they present it? How can you "enter the conversation"? James Franco doesn't really talk about his view of the movie. He just brags about himself and relates everything back to him. I agree with the evidence Anthony Lane provided which I stated in the last question. I think he was trying to say that there's more than meets the eye when it comes to this movie.

Initial Responses

I had never heard of the movie Moonrise Kingdom until we watched it in class. My initial response to the movie was that it was very strange. A lot was going on in the beginning and I was kind of confused at to how is all was going to come together. It was a very weird plot but it was also very interesting. It was like nothing I have ever seen before which made me excited to watch the next half and to see how it was all going to play out.

Problem Paragraph

This paragraph talks about the sentimental appeal used in the commercial called "failure 3". I feel like I do not describe what I am trying to say well enough. Feel free to give me any suggestions on how to make this paragraph better. Thanks!

Another thing that relates to scare tactics is sentimental appeal. America is known for its patriotism after all it is the land of unalienable rights; life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Therefore, what better way to connect with the citizens of the country than by talking about our involvement in wars. It is obviously a very controversial topic that needs to be handled very delicately. Nobody wants to be going to war, to send off their loved ones without knowing if they’ll return, or to live in the fear of not knowing if we are safe in our own homes. By showing those videos of people running for their lives and gun shots being fired that would make anyone worried about being engaged in a war. Adding this sentimental appeal is exactly what Mondale wanted to accomplish, it makes the audience feel a connection to it by not wanting to end up like those other countries. Mondale does this to soften up the audience before using his next rhetorical trick of the straw man to hook them.

Political Advertisements vs. Consumer Advertisements

When I was analyzing Nike advertisements the thing I noticed that occurred in most of them was that they were using pathos to connect to your emotions but in a good way; inspiration and motivation. But so far what I have noticed with political advertisements is that a lot of them attack their opponents instead of saying what they would do for the country. Both types of advertisements use pathos but instead of using it for inspiration and motivation, political advertisements can use it to scare you by saying if you don't vote for a certain candidate then the world is going to blow up. Political advertisements often use Ad hominem and scare tactics while consumer advertisements use more of appeal to authority and your desires.

Discussion Question 3: Class Participation

3. Why does reflective writing help a student learn and develop as a better writer? How does it work?

Reflective writing helps a student learn and develop as a better writer in a couple different ways. It helps them because it allows them to see if this is really what they want to say and how they want to say it. To re-see these questions in their paper, they have to set a certain distance between themselves and the paper and that is exactly what reflective writing creates. It also helps the instructor by giving them a better way to guide through the paper and to know to respond to it better. The intentions of reflective writing are to give a sense to the audience of what you are trying to say, this is essential for the communication from the author, to the paper, to the audience. Reflecting on yourself as a writer is what makes you grow and turn into the writer you want to become. It works because instead of just writing to please your teacher, you actually become involved and have a real intention of what you are trying to say through your piece.

Thesis, Outline, Body

Thesis: Political advertisements often don’t say why they should be president but rather attack the other opponent. To figure out how they go about doing this I analyzed two commercials from the Reagan vs. Carter era. I looked into logos, ethos, pathos, images being shown, and what is being said throughout the advertisements.

Body Paragraph:

The campaign I’m going to focus on is the Reagan vs. Carter era. I watched multiple videos from each side and have noticed multiple strange things. The first thing I’m going to analyze is what they discuss in the commercials. In the first commercial I watched for President Carter stated "Vote for yourself, you don't have to for me, vote for your own interest." and then at the end it says "vote for your own well fare by voting democratic." That stands out to me because he is saying to pretty much do what you want, but reelect him. It is just very strange and contradictive. This commercial did not accomplish what it should have. It didn’t state why they were the better candidate, they only talked about why the other candidate is the worse pick.

Discussion Question

What have you learned about making writing and revision choices based on your own thinking? What have you learned about acting on feedback from readers like your peers or your instructor?

Something I have learned about making writing and revision choices based on my own thinking is that since I wrote the paper and put a lot of effort into it, I obviously think it is well written. But what makes me a better writer is to get feedback from my peers. Sometimes that can see things in my writing that can be written in a better way and be able to give me pointers on how to make it better. That leads me into the second question that I need to be open to taking suggestions from people. They aren’t criticizing my writing to hurt me but to help make me a better writer.

Draft of Analysis

The campaign I’m going to focus on is the Reagan vs. Carter era. I watched multiple videos from each side and have noticed multiple strange things. The first thing I’m going to analyze is what they discuss in the commercials. In the first commercial I watched for President Carter stated "Vote for yourself, you don't have to for me, vote for your own interest." and then at the end it says "vote for your own well fare by voting democratic." That stands out to me because he is saying to pretty much do what you want, but reelect him. It is just very strange and contradictive. In the second commercial I watched for President Reagan it was talking about how a change was needed for the country and how President Carter was not good for the country and that Reagan would be a better candidate. What neither of these commercials accomplished was they didn’t state why they were the better candidate, they only talked about why the other candidate is the worse pick. The next commercial I watched for Carter really took me by surprise because it was talking about how he is a religious man and how he prays on a daily basis. Now a days presidential candidates try and avoid the topic of religion because it is a very controversial matter. I know today it is very controversial whether or not Obama is Muslim or not so obviously today they wouldn’t show a commercial based off of religion. The Reagan commercial that corresponded with it was really well in my opinion. He talked about how he would make a better America and how he would keep his promises. There was also an independent candidate during this time, John Anderson. Honestly I think his commercial was better than some of Reagan’s and Carter’s. It talked about his background and all that he has accomplished. Usually independent candidates don’t get very far because most people are either Republican or Democratic and don’t really keep an open mind about anything else. I’m not going to lie, I don’t know very much about independent parties either. But watching John Anderson’s commercial made me want to research more and to keep an open mind without letting my political views get in the way. Another commercial I watched for Jimmy Carter was absolutely terrible. It showed videos of people on the streets sating how they don’t like Reagan and just completely bashing him. That is not a way to get a message across. I know this has happened on both sides of the argument obviously and it’s wrong on both sides. Candidates need to stop bashing one another and actually start giving us reasons to vote for them. Tell us what they plan on doing, what their views are, how they are going to fix problems throughout our country, and why we should trust them. That brings me to the last commercial I watched for Reagan. His wife Nancy is talking and asks those same questions to Carter. She wants the cards laid all on the table which is what the citizens want as well. The reason I think she doesn’t say what Reagan will accomplish is because that is not her place to. That is his job to tell us all what he plans to do if he is elected president. The last commercial I watched for President Carter stated false claims about Reagan. It put words into his mouth that he didn’t say in that order. It even shows the clip of what Reagan said and you can clearly see that the video is chopped in the middle and it is not all one sentence. That is just very childish in my opinion and doesn’t need to happen. I think that everyone should be treated the way they want to be treated in any type of competition. And I also think that if an opponent attacks you in an unfair way, our instinct would be to attack them back. After all if you can’t take it then don’t dish it out. But in a situation like this, you would just need to be the bigger person and not stoop to their level.

Freewriting on Paper 3

The thing that I think is going to be the hardest for this paper is to keep an open mind and to not let my political beliefs get in the way. I have a very passionate personality and am very interested in politics. Something I really like is how we are looking at ads that are from many years ago. One, it does really make it easier to not take anything too personally since it really isn’t hitting home. And two, it’s very interesting to look at what political advertisements were like in the past and how ridiculous/humorous some of them are! Something I hope I can do better one this paper is to get more specific. One my past two papers I know that I haven’t been as specific as I could’ve been. That’s what is really hard for me to do though. I’m not really sure why. I guess it’s because I’m more of a math person. I like straight to the point things. 1 + 1 = 2. Done. But in English you have try to explain yourself in not straight-forward ways, if that makes sense. I’ve never been much of a language arts person. I think I just need to learn how to go deeper into my work. Even if I feel that I described it as specific as I can, to just take it another step further. Maybe I should get more people to read my essays as well because maybe they’ll see something wrong with it that I can’t see myself.

The Living Room Canidate

http://www.livingroomcandidate.org/commercials/1980/ballot

After making a list of details I notice, what I found most interesting was what first noticed about this commercial for President Carter in 1980. It was that through out the commercial it states "Vote for yourself, you don't have to for me, vote for your own interest." and then at the end it says "vote for your own well fare by voting democratic." That stands out to me because he is saying to pretty much do what you want, but reelect him. It is just very strange and contradictive.

Analyzing "Sanitized" Version and "Ghost to Sell Scotch"

While analyzing these advertisements, what I noticed was that they all use pathos to connect to the audience. Encouraging you to be free and to do things if your heart is in it and if it's what you want. The first advertisement does this by saying "It may not be much light but it beats the darkness." That right there is something I think everyone can relate to. Everyone goes through hardships in their life but what you go through doesn't make you who you are, it's how you react to it. The second advertisement uses pathos also by saying "If you have to wait for it to roar out of you, then wait." That is also something that I think everyone can relate to. Nobody is just given anything, you have to work for it. What I don't understand though is how the first ad relates this to sell you Levi's jeans and the second ad uses this to sell scotch. Just because you wear Levi's or drink Scotch doesn't make you a different person. Which is why I think these advertisements use pathos to connect to you to make you think that it does.

Freewriting Paper 2

"What the odds don't know is this isn't a math test. This is a completely different kind of test. One where passion has a funny way of trumping logic." That is my favorite quote from the Nike advertisement. The commercial gets to me by playing with my emotions, or by using pathos to connect to the audience. It inspires me to never give up or quit trying. That everybody can tell me that I'll never make it no matter how hard I try. As an athlete, the biggest inspiration to me is to tell me I won't be able to do something. A few summers ago I had to have knee surgery because I dislocated my knee playing lacrosse. I was told that I would never be able to run again or even be able to jog again. Running is my passion and hearing that only made me want to run more. I kept working in physical therapy and now I can run 5ks and even out run my high school cheerleading coach. These advertisements inspire me to do even more and to not give up on my biggest dream which is to run a marathon. The only thing I'm worried about is I don't know how I'm going to write 4-5 pages on just how these commercials play with your emotions..

Analyzing and Ad

The two commercials I have chosen to analyze:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPkyPdubqDs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niHSWYE-PLI

The first ad is from this year and the second ad is from 3 years ago. They are both Nike ads so obviously they are advertising the same product. Since I'm an athlete, when I saw both of these ads they really inspired me. They connect with their audience using rhetorical devices through pathos. They appeal to your emotions. Figuring out how they accomplish this is going to be the tricky part. What I’m going to figure out is how exactly they inspire people. I know it inspires me since I’m an athlete and every athlete has struggles they have to overcome but I don’t know how it appeals to people who don’t play sports, does it even appeal to them at all?

My Writing Process

I am very competitive and athletic so the way I approached my paper was almost in the same process I would do before a race. Step 1: Free Write or "Brain Storming"; this could also be taken as a warm-up lap, something to get the juices flowing and ideas to form. Step 2: Outline; could be taken as stretching before a race, thinking about how your going to accomplish your goal and how to approach the final product. Step 3: Moving from idea to rough draft; or gradually picking up speed to keep up in the race. And finally Step 4: Rough draft to final draft; or pushing through and giving it your all to make it to the finish line or making final adjustments to get an A. Thankfully this is an English assignment and not an art assignment.

Writing Process For Paper 1

What worked- Free writing! At first I was very nervous about free writing because I have always written in a certain format and structure but by free writing I was able to express my ideas easier and I think I wrote better too!

What didn't work- The only problem that came with free writing is that I think I didn't know how to organize it. In the end I went back through and rearranged some paragraphs so hopefully the paper flowed well and made sense.

Paragraph for Peer Review

Are we born believing in God? A very simple yet complex question. In the world today you have a million different opinions being thrown at you. You can’t go anywhere or listen to anything without someone forcing their view into your mind. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a reliable, unprejudiced source that wasn’t influenced in wrong ways? A place where people could share their opinions and exchange their ideas in a civil manner? I think I have found just that source. A blog called Big Questions Online. I plan to figure out how they keep the blog open-minded and what about the writing keeps the blog from taking a certain side. This blog speaks to open-minded individuals using unbiased and open opinions to discuss controversial questions.

The reason I chose this paragraph is because I feel like I do not grasp the reader's attention fast enough. And also because I feel as though I'm not being specific enough with what I'm trying to say.

In-Class Writing

WA’s “Moving From Idea to Thesis Statement” (p.228-231)
·         How can you use your idea to “take a position” in your thesis? I can use my idea to take a position in my thesis by closely examining Big Questions Online and looking at it from every perspective to start an argument rather than just stating my opinion.
·         Since we have moved far along in the writing process, how do you think this has affected your thesis? Has it strengthened it? How do you think you can further develop your claims? By reading writing analytically my ability to write has already increased tremendously. Through out middle school and high school I was always told to write a certain way and was honestly never very good at it, but by reading all these different texts and discussing how to write thesis statements in class, I feel like I am already a much more experienced writer than I was before because now I know how to express myself in a paper without using a certain outline.
·         How does thinking about your ideas as “working theses” give you freedoms similar to other writing types we have discussed in class? Thinking about my ideas in this way gives me freedoms similar to other writing types because the ball is in my hand and I get to choose where to go from here. Freewriting has been my favorite part of this assignment so far because there are no restraints on what I can do and my thoughts can just flow freely.
·         Compare and contrast strong and weak theses, using specific examples from your paper. Construct a weak version of your thesis. Now construct what the textbook defines as the strongest possible thesis you can manage. Weak thesis: This blog speaks to open-minded individuals using unbiased and open opinions to discuss controversial questions. Strong thesis: Although many blogs nowadays shove their opinion into your head on certain issues, Big Questions Online, one may consider starts open-minded and un-biased discussions on controversial issues through out the world.
·         Describe the “feature or features of what your subject means.” Big Questions online is all about fostering discussion on controversial issues. It's audience is people who want to explore the world deeper than what meets the eye so their features are deeper moral issues that don't have one right answer.
·         In what way is your thesis “an idea in need of an argument?” My thesis is an idea in need of an argument because I state that some think it is an unbiased blog but maybe someone else sees tension and bias throughout the blog that I don't see.
Try This, 11.1 (p. 230)
·         Find the “tension” in each example, using the information on page 229.
o    ...IS as radical a campaign as the original...
o    .... It makes life worse for EVERYONE...
o    ... A self set apart have SURELY been felt...
o    ... habitat as NECESSARY for doubtful...
o    ... HAS gone much too far...
o    .... ARE precisely the opposite....
·         Define the “primary idea” and the “Back Pressure” for each example.
o    That "Nice Pants" is as radical as the original.
o    The cosmetic surgery may make some people happy but makes life worse for everyone in the end.
o    The history of the modern era building may be an exaggeration but the consequences have been felt in every field of inquiry.
o    Too often planners and engineers would justify creative destruction of habitat as essential for doubtful utopias.
o    Time to bring middlebrow out of its cultural closet because it makes us appreciate high art.
o    The connection between the idea of place and the reality of cellphones in not encouraging.
·         Try to construct a “straw man” out of one of the examples. How can you make the strong thesis into a weak thesis?
o    Straw man for example 2: Cosmetic surgery makes life worse for everyone and will make you regret every getting the procedure done and therefore be a waste of time and money and want you to never go out in public during the daylight again.

The Blog I Chose To Analyze

The blog I chose to analyze like I have stated before is Big Questions Online. The purpose of this blog is to explore questions of human purpose and to spark discussion through these topics in a unbiased way. The audience of this blog would be people who want to investigate deeper meanings of the universe than what is just apparent to the common eye which could be a very broad audience so to say. This website is a publication of the John Templeton Foundation which funds inter-disciplinary research about human purpose and ultimate reality. The foundation gives away about $70 million per year in research grants and programs and accepts online funding inquiries twice a year. The visual organization contributes to a reading of the blog's "rhetorical situation" in many ones. First of all, the website portrays it's exigency by showing the "Favorite Discussions" big and bold right in the center. This shows what the website is all about and what keeps the website going. Which leads to the second thing that relates to the rhetorical situations, the audience. The audience as I have already stated is people who want to explore true meaning in the universe. The constraints of the website are that even though people can comment on discussions and give their opinion, each comment must be approved before being posted. This changes the way I think about the website even though they state that comments will only not be posted if they; disrupt the flow of conversation relating to the article under which it is posted, is off-topic, harasses or abuses other members of the community, is libelous, obscene, or offensive, encourages or condones unlawful activity, contains personal contact details (other than a URL) or advertisements, or is repetitious or spam. But how can we know for sure that is true?

Respond To A Reading

My favorite reading that we have done in Unit 1 so far has been "Why I Blog" by Andrew Sullivan. The part that really hit home for me was when he said, "On my blog, my readers and I experienced 9/11 together, in real time. I can look back and see not just how I responded to the event, but how I responded to it at 3:47 that afternoon. And at 9:46 that night. There is a vividness to this immediacy that cannot be rivaled by print. The same goes for the 2000 recount, the Iraq War, the revelations of Abu Ghraib, the death of John Paul II, or any of the other history-making events of the past decade. There is simply no way to write about them in real time without revealing a huge amount about yourself." This quote just made me realize how feelings are truly expressed in blogs. I guess it appealed to me so much because my cousin was killed on 9/11 so hearing him refer to that made me realize how blogging is so much more than just writing online. It's raw material that can't be expressed in any other way. I also liked how he specified the exact time he reacted to all of those situations. It marks true emotions on what happened on those days. That's something that nobody else can write except for you. It would be interesting to go and find those posts to see how others felt that day.

Free Write

The blog I have chosen to write about for my essay is Big Questions Online. Picking a blog was very hard for me and I didn’t really know what I was doing. Most blogs just talked about the latest news or the juiciest scandal. But what caught my attention on Big Questions Online is that the first thing I saw was the question “Why Should Scientists Care About Religion?”. Seeing an article with that title completely blew me away. I became hooked jumping from article to article. But what I really wanted to figure out was if the blog was biased or not. Because obviously, everyone has their own beliefs about religion and their own beliefs about science. I wondered if this would be a blog that pushed you into believing one way by using rhetorical devices and other concepts. As I began to read the article I was shocked. The author states that he is a scientist and a Muslim which really shocked me. He tried to convince others with his spiritual beliefs to look into modern science and vice versa with his fellow scientist colleagues. The article wasn’t biased at all and looked at each view in every perspective. The author Nidhal Guessoum states “It may be obvious that we cannot ignore science, with its methods and results. But it would also be beneficial to humanity if science and scientists not only refrained from trying to erase all that religion can provide and insisting on purely rational behaviors but also gleaned some of the positive contributions that it can make to humanity. There is more to the world than science can see. . .” I hope that all the other articles on this blog look at any situation in the same way by viewing all sides of the problem. It makes me question if maybe I’m blindsided to a biased opinion or not. Or if others see something in a different way than I do. Then I went to the discussion and saw others people’s arguments and perspectives. This blog will be great to write my paper on since it deals with so many discussions that cannot obviously have a right or wrong answer.

English Composition

Hello! This is a blog for my English Comp class! There will be various posts, such as reading comments, free responses, etc.. Hope you enjoy!
